the good, the bad and the ugly.

I hesitated to write about this, but I feel in order to present an accurate picture of our life right now, (which is what I attempt to do at CTL) I feel it’s important to write about it.  Cherry Tree Lane serves as a daily journal of our life and this is something that has been going on for over a month and I think it will feel good to just write it out and let it be.  This is a bit of a step for me, so if it isn’t written well, clear or with enough feeling/emotion, please forgive me.  It’s much easier to write about pool days, trips to Disneyland and colorful moments, than it is to write about this.

*************

My dad has cancer.

He has Desmo Plastic Spindal Cell Melanoma.  Its malignant and he had a biopsy and surgery about two weeks ago.  They thought they got all of it (it was on his back, neck, and one of his arms).  They did a further biopsy last week and realized that it had spread and is transmitted through his body through nerves and blood. It is more aggressive than they had thought. It’s a very rare type of cancer, mostly effecting men and little is known about it (generally speaking). At his last appointment, they told him it was stage 3 (this is when i began to get nervous) but that it had not become ulcerated (good news).  They referred him to an oncologist who basically told him that he needed to go to a cancer center.

So, my dad has an appointment next Wednesday, May 20th at 7am at UCI Cancer Center.

It’s the next step.

I suppose the “real” reason that I am writing is because I have realized (in the past few months, through many different situations) that prayer from others is important. God delights in His people coming before the throne and asking for help. There is no glory or medals for acting strong or going things alone.  I have never felt really comfortable calling people or asking people to “pray for me” or help, but ….

I guess that is what I’m doing.

I’m aware that there are many Cherry Tree Lane readers that aren’t Christian like I am, and while I think all that new age stuff is complete hooey, I wouldn’t mind a “positive vibe” or some “good energy” either.

Thanks in advance for pulling for my dad.

Kent.

:):) How can I say thanks enough…..so many people have been calling and writing especially here at work…..that is where it gets to be so mind blowing. I have come to embrace the fact that watever transpires, I am merely a servant of God here on earth and this situation brings one person closer to understanding the reality of God and what He can do for them, then I need to embrace this with the totality of my inner being.

    I love you

    Dad

  2. I just stopped and said a little prayer, and I will continue to pray for your father and your family. It takes a lot to share this, thank you.

  3. Praying for your dad. God does amazing things!

  4. I will pray for your dad. That is such a hard thing to see, and I know what you mean about blogging. You kind of keep that stuff out of it for the most part. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

  5. I know you don’t normally write about these personal things, but you’re absolutely right – whether you believe in God or any other higher power your dad and your family need the power of massive prayer and positive thinking. Your blog is a powerful way to harness that goodness, that faithfulness that lies in each of us.

    I will continue to pray…

  6. Rosa

Nate’s mom has been keeping us updated. We have been praying for all of you.

  7. Your Brother

I commend my sister in doing this. To date I have only really spoken with my girlfriend about this. And I dont really have a venue to do such things. Facebook is NOT a vehicle for good in my estimation 🙂 jk

For the minions that come and read this, they should know that my Dad is a bulldog. Literally. Hes a little shorter but has arms the size of tanks and is a strong stubborn and determined man. I dont know about the strength of the cancer, but in my extensive dealings with my father I know that it is not as strong as my Dad. Call me naive. But my dad is gonna kick this things ass. (Can I say ass on your blog sis?)

Thank you Rachel for doing this. You are strong like our dad 🙂

Amen son. Your dad and my God are stronger than any form of cancer., We will pray him through this. Thank you

  8. hey sweetness – guess I’m representing your “non-christian readership” – regardless of my beliefs your life is an amazing testimony to Christ and his love as you embody it so purely and beautifully in every aspect of your life – no “hooey” about it.

your dad will be in my heart – that’s where my dad lived as he healed from his prostate cancer so that’s where I’ll keep yours too, if you don’t mind…

  9. Mary L

Your dad and brother make me cry! Of course I am praying and I agree with Jonathan. Your dad is strong and so are you!

  10. I’m sorry to hear about your dad. I will add him and you into our prayers.

  11. Rachel, you and your family will be in my prayers! And I agree that even though its hard to open up about certain things, the more people you have praying the better!

  12. I’m very sorry to hear that your dad has cancer. You’re right..cancer DOES suck. But…God is good…and He can do anything….all things are possible with Him…He answers prayer and He works miracles. And I will join with you in prayer for the miraculous healing of your father…”Stage 3″ means nothing to God… I lift your father up and I agree with you in prayer…in Jesus’ name…

    Michelle

  13. Elma

I so agree with your brother:) My dad had a rare blood cancer and just passed away. He lived with this for 28 years. They gave him 6 months to live and I believe it( I know)it was his Faith and his strong will to live that he lived for 28 yrs with it:) I pray that our Lord will give all your dad needs at this time and that the the Lord guides the doctors in his care. Take care my dear we love you and will keep you in our prayers.

  14. Kat

I promise to continue to pray for your dad! And if you need anything, like a babysitter , or a meal, or anything, PLEASE call me.

  15. Kat

HAHAHA…I would love to make a meal for your whole family…but I doubt you’d want me to attempt sushi. =o)

  16. Sooo will be praying for you, your family and dear dad.

  17. I too will be praying. God is good!

    Kent –

Your dad and family are in my prayers. My father battled Stage 4 metastatic melanoma last year. I understand how difficult this time is, and it sometimes feels like no one can understand. Hope and prayer are powerful, and God’s will is good.

    All my best.

  19. Laura

Rachel, I was faced with the same situation almost exactly this time last year with my dad (in fact I think it might have been the same kind of cancer). Just remember stop to feel Gods arms around you. Cancer does suck, but our God is much bigger. I won’t stop praying…

  20. wow. once again i am blown away by your honesty and ability to put it out there.
as your dad endures his battle i will lift him up in prayer. Cancer sounds so menacing and it seems no family is safe. currently my grandmother is undergoing chemo for uterine cancer and my mother battled breast cancer 3 years ago. I can only imagine what range of emotions you must be feeling.
if you ever need an extra ear……
    best of love,
    amber

    Hi Rachel…

Thanks for stopping by this morning, to read about Kayleigh. Such a sad situation her family is in…what a loss.

We will be putting your dad on our Prayer List on our Blog. If you would, please update us, so we will know how to continue praying for him. Is your dad’s name Kent? (That’s kind of how I read your post.)

    ~Blessings,
    Jan

  22. Rachel, you know your dad is most definitely in my prayers!!!! I know this must be such a tough experience to have to go through, but with lots of prayer and strength, you will get through it! 25. I am SO sorry. 😦 Your dad is definitely in my prayers.

  26. I am in tears. I am feeling so much from your post. I am hoping that what I am feeling, is taking a little bit of your worry, and giving you a tiny bit of peace so you can sleep tonight…

I don’t know what to say, except that, I pray, a lot. And your dad will be top on my list tonight, as will your whole family. Lots of love.

Fairy Dance by James Newton Howard is playing in the background, I hope everyone in heaven and all realms of goodness and beyond, will hear our prayers. xoxo

  27. done, done & done…lots of prayers for your family!

  28. Kat

    Hi there!
Thanks for your visit and coment. I hope you’ll come again…you’re always welcome.

I’m so sorry about your Dad. As a cancer survivor myself, I know how scary that word is. As a survivor, I also know the power of prayer. I promise I wil add him to my prayers tonight.

I’ve enjoy scrolling through your blog. Very nice!

    Hugs!
    Kat

  29. I’m glad you found the quote on my blog a blessing to you. I almost didn’t post it. When I popped in to thank you for stopping by my blog and read your post about your dad, my first thought was, “Oh, this is why I had to post it….A dear sister needed to hear it as much as I did.”

Saying a prayer for your dad and for you, right now…

  30. I agree, cancer sucks… I will be sending out my positive energy the only way that works: prayer. 🙂 Many hugs to your family and you, and the difficult journey ahead of you.

  31. I am so sorry about your Dad, I will be praying for him and your family as well! It sounds like y’all have a great relationship, your brother is a hoot! LOL

  32. Thanks for the comment on the photos. It’s turning into a fun hobby….

Just read your post and know that you, your dad and your entire family are now on my prayer list.

  33. I will “storm the Heavens” for your Dad! I will be on my knees the 20th!
Lots and LOTS of prayers to you guys!
We serve an AWESOME God! and He is able to do more than we could ever imagine!! (someday I’ll share our “miracle story”)
    Many prayers and Blessings!

  34. I’m sorry your dad and your family have to deal with this. 😦 Cancer is a horrible horrible thing.

But God is bigger! Thank you for being a brave Christian on your blog!

Prayers are being said for your dad.

  35. Oh! My heart just stopped… I will be praying for your father. Hold on tight.

  36. Thanks for trusting us with this. Praying for you.

  37. I would be more than happy to pray, and I’m so glad you asked, it will be a privelege!
    XOXO

  38. Our God is stronger than anything that could come our way – including this cancer. And He is listening to all of the prayers being lifted up for your dad right now. Our prayers are right up there as well. Thank you for sharing.

  39. will definitely say a prayer for your dad… I am sure everything will be just fine!! hang in there!!

  41. holly

hi rachel. i am a friend of your brothers, and have been following your ever-so creative and lovely blog for a while. you are an amazing person with a heart for god i strongly admire. i wanted to reach out and let you know that your family is in my prayers. i pray that god brings you comfort in these difficult days.

  42. Dickey Best

This is incredible. I just had to bow my head in my office and cry. I am typing right now with tears in my eyes. Man, I love Kent. And if he has never done anything else right in your life, just reading this email must make you realize that he did a great job of taking care of what God gave he and Rene in a little girl named Rachel. Ad she is a now a mom at age 26? Wow – what a testimony.
May I have permission to forward this email to a band of brothers who prayed for you this AM, and for many days now?
I live in south Georgia, and believe it or not, am an educated man who loves teh Lord and loves my family. I have spent the last few years hearing one story after another of Kent’s family. As his son said, teh Bulldog Kent is stronger than any form of cancer Satan can make. My God is stronger, too.

  43. I came by to thank you for your kind comment on my blog; it was so nice of you to stop by. That seems so trivial in light of your father’s situation. I am sorry to hear about it and I send you positive thoughts. The waiting and worrying is so awful. I know you must feel helpless. Best wishes!

  44. I just said a prayer for your dad and for your family as well. May the Peace that passes all understanding be with you all now!

  45. gina

I will be praying Rachel….relentlessly. I thought of this song just now; maybe it will comfort you and fill you as it does me.

    Your Love oh Lord
    reaches to the heavens
    Your Faithfulness
    stretches to the sky
    Your Righteousness
    is like the mighty mountain
    Your Justice flows
    like the oceans tides

    I will lift my voice
    to worship you my King
And I will find my strength
in the shadow of your wings

    Love you friend.

  46. I am praying! I am hopeful! I am here if you need anything!

  47. Hello Rachel! First, a word of THANKS for visiting my blog, for leaving a nice note & for leading me to your lovely site. Secondly, please know that I prayed for you today and for your dad, too. I’ll keep him in my prayers.

I’ll share with you this prayer:

    A PRAYER FOR HEALING
Lord, You invite all who are burdened to come to you. Allow Your healing Hand to heal me. Touch my soul with Your compassion for others; touch my heart with Your courage and infinite Love for all; touch my mind with Your Wisdom, and may my mouth always proclaim Your praise. Teach me to reach out to You in all my needs, and help me to lead others to You by my example.
Most loving Heart of Jesus, bring me health in body and spirit that I may serve You with all my strength. Touch gently this life which you have created, now and forever. Amen.

    Hugs, Claire

Like my sis said, we heard some of the same news from our dad almost exactly one year ago….and very easily our news could have furthered the way yours has. Not that my prayers and talks with God count more than anyone else’s, but I do feel like I know just what you are going through and how to pray for you. Maybe that’s why our dad’s have had this experience….to bring their kids closer to God and to learn how to care and pray for other’s going through the same thing. Thank you Jesus…even in the midst of confusion…you are SO GOOD. We are praying for all of you! Keep us updated PLEASE!

  49. I absolutely believe that prayers can bring about miracles. I will be praying for your dad and your family. I went through something similar with my dad about 5 years ago. It was before I began blogging, but I wish I could have shared our story with other people at that time.

    ((hugs))
    Jen

  50. Laundry Lady

I’m sure that was hard to share, but I speak for many when I say I’m glad you did. I believe God listens to each of us individually and gives according to his will, but it is also true that he is pleased when we join together in prayer. Never be afraid to ask for it, as hard as it may be. Anytime.

    Lori

  51. You know that my hooey is in his corner – hey dad? You’re gonna beat this in no time!

  52. So sorry friend. I’ll definitely pray for you guys.

  53. Hey Rachel –

Your dad and your family are in my prayers. I’m so sorry you all have to go through this. We don’t always understand why we have to go through some of the trials we go through, but if we have faith in the Lord’s plan for us we can take comfort that He is watching out for us and we aren’t alone.

Be strong and be well! Let us know how things go!

  54. dad

Thanks to everyone for your responses!! I am so overwhelmed and touched by your kind words, thoughts and prayers….I am sure that if asked, Rachel would say that I have quite a sense of humor and am a little zany, especially with Kensington in the room….so with that being said, with all of your support and God’s involvement, this thing will be a ingrown pimple before I go in next Wed!! LOL

    Love to all

    Rachel’s Pop

  55. I’m sorry to hear that you & your family are going through this. Prayer is good and He is good no matter what. I will keep your Dad & family in my prayers.

BTW, I don’t know how I can read such a serious & honest post but still laugh at the use of the word “hooey”. That is a good word.

  56. i am so sorry sounds like the normal and much needed to say response…but i know it doesn’t hold water to your feelings…i hope the fact that i am praying for you and your family floods you with a peace that passes all understanding.

i saw your dad’s response at the top of the comments…what an amazing gift he has been given to have a strength that sets so many examples…may God continue to give ya’ll good news as we go to Him on your behalf.

    {hope you enjoy miss potter and its an emotional break for you…it is a sweet story on a true classic!}

  57. I fully believe in the power of prayer. I believe that when others pray on your behalf it’s just that much more powerful. I’ve been lucky enough to have amazing people around me, praying for me as I heal from pain and surgery and I’m doing great. REALLY great. I attribute it all to answered prayers. During these difficult times, it’s the MOST important thing we can do. Your dad and your family will be in my prayers. I can’t imagine how hard that must be.

Keep your head up. Keep fighting. God can do incredible things!

My mom worked as an Oncology nurse for a million years before she started the job she has now. She worked at St. Joseph’s, City of Hope, did bone marrow transplants and all kinds of stuff. If any questions come up about good doctors or facilities or anything like that, I can always ask her opinion. She’s an amazing nurse and has seen a lot of cancer in her life. Just one more knowledgeable person who can be on your side.

  58. Oh Rachel! I just got caught up on your blog….I am so very, very sorry to hear your bad news. Just know you and your Dad are in my prayers, from here on… and if I could, I’d be there bringing you dinner tonight!!
    Take care sweetheart.
    Love,
    Kelly

  59. I’m so sorry to hear about your daddy. I will pray right now for his complete healing. Kathi
