I’m obviously no good on the forum front today … all I can think of is “Great Expectations” and creepy Miss Havisham catching aflame. So. Thanks for that … 😉

  3. usually lead to disappointments.

  4. You get what you expect much of the time. Set your expectations high.

  5. the lower the better

(not sure you were going for such a chipper sentiment, but it was the first thing that popped into my head…)

I am usually such a positive person… but when it comes to expectations… I will echo the sentiments of Melissa and Heidi…

-a. Lower the better (no ooie gooey high hopes of unrealistic things…)
-b. When I forgo my own advice (-see a)… I am 99% of the time completely disappointed….

(this pertains to me and I don’t mean to offend anyone who practices “expectations” and aren’t marred and frustrated by them. 🙂 )

I am a hot mess when I “expect” things… I am not putting the situation or the person in God’s hands and I am trying to control the situation with my mind.

So I try with all my might to give it ALL to God and remind myself daily to let go all of MY expectations and ask him to prepare my heart for his will.

  7. While most of the time I try not to have high expectations for fear of being disappointed or disappointing others, I try to remember this:

It’s okay to have high expectations. Don’t hold back, ask God to fulfill your dreams and you might be surprised when He exceeds them.

These words from a friend have been resonating with me lately. Most of the time I don’t ask God for what I really want out of life and I don’t really know why. Perhaps I don’t feel worthy, perhaps I’m afraid He’ll just say no, but I’ve seen it happen when somebody really trusts that He will deliver and what they end up getting is above and beyond anything they could have asked for.

  8. expect the unexpected.
especially when kids and or husbands/boyfriends/fiances are involved.
    Let go and let GOD!!!

I have learned not to “expect” things to go a certain way or I will surely be dissappointed.

  9. Ah! The one word that defines essentially all differences btw me & my husband.

Me: I expect too much. From myself, from my family, from the clerk at the grocery store. And then I get disappointed, and therefore, annoyed.

Hubby: Don’t expect much of anything. From anybody. And then everything you do get is a pleasant surprise.

His approach sounds terrible at first (at least to me…), but I have to admit, I’ve really seen it work wonders. Or maybe he’s just a naturally less annoy-able person. That’s probably really true, too.

  10. I agree with Kelsi. You set high expectations, and people usually rise to the occasion; I’m sure I’m paraphrasing or quoting Dr. Laura. lol

  11. Julie

    I agree!

When I was teaching, I set my expectations high and found that kids will rise up to meet them. It was a beautiful thing!

  12. Cass

    I need to lower mine.

  13. I agree with Heidi…disappointment is usually found when expectations have been set. John’s motto is similar to Ralph’s…expect the worst and you, either won’t be disappointed, or you’ll be pleasantly surprised. 😉
