Swine Flu.

Are you getting the vaccine?  Are you getting it for your kids?  Are you scared?  Do you wish that it would just go away?  Does this inhibit you from eating bacon (joke)?  Do you feel it is blown out of proportion?

  1. I was totally and completely freaked out about it. I blogged for an entire week about my irrationality and preventive measures.

Then it hit our city – hard – and people were getting sick right and left. And absolutely all of them were fine. Sick for a few days, but fine.

    Sick happens. Live your life.

And no we aren’t getting the vaccine. It’s in short supply and others need it more.

Refer to my post over the summer on Swine Flu…still feel the same

I feel it has been blown out of proportion. Each year the many varieties of flu take people’s lives, it hasn’t just been the swine flu.

Having a husband that is a firefighter has made me aware of many other healthscares that the public doesn’t even talk about, lack of knowledge? I am not sure. Take for instance, MRSA. Google it. It can also be a killer and one is more likely to get this than the swine flu.

There is always going to be something that the public will freak out about. Oink, oink.

  4. I’m torn! Not normally a flu-vaccination kinda gal, but being 7 mos pregnant… and then “they” are saying that anyone living with a baby under 6 mos old should get one. AHHH! Hormones + contemplating the swine flu vaccination is making my eyes go crossed! 🙂

  5. I posted about this too…take a gander at what others have said…and you can see what I said back in the comments 🙂

yes, i’m lazy and don’t want to type it all out again 🙂

  6. I’ve been told it’s not much worse than regular flu, and the only scary thing about it is that it affects young healthy people. But I’ve never met anyone who has had it, and despite dire warnings in the press, it really hasn’t hit too hard over here. So no, I’m not too bothered about it, I’ll still be taking regular precautions this winter to keep from getting sick, and I won’t get the vaccination – I’ve never had it for regular flu either.

  7. No we are not getting the vaccine. I don’t feel like there has been enough research done to see the long term effects of the vaccine. I think that as long as you are smart about making sure your kids wash their hands, drink plenty of water and keep them home when they are feeling sick than you and your children should be fine. I really feel it’s just all media and the news just loves to cause panic any way that they can.

  8. Naaahh.. I know there are a ton of people who have had it, and it’s a bad flu, but I haven’t known one person that has died.

I do avoid all pork products now though. Kidding!

Nope we are not getting it. Who knows what the side effects are??

  10. Mary

Yep. Definately overblown hype. Nope. Not getting the shot. I think the swine flu is OVER RATED, much like Barack Obama is!

We can’t get the regular flu vaccine. It can set off a paralyzing genetic disease that my kids and I may or may not have (genetic testing is too expensive, and we just err on the side of caution). Since it’s brand new, no one knows the side effects, or whether or not this, too, can cause paralysis for me and my family, we’re staying away. We’re pretty convinced that our boys had the swine flu about a month or so ago. They survived. I’m not too worried about it.

We are very torn over here. We know lots of people who have had it/have it and it didn’t hit any of them TOO bad. I am a bit fearful, but I think the vaccine makes me worry even more. We probably won’t get it (if for no other reason than it will be hard to get a hold of), but who knows! Adam and I just got our first ever flu shots…silly media tricking us into things!

All this to say, I don’t know :o)

  13. No. No. No. Yes. Yes, everything does. 😉 Yes.

  14. I’d like to weigh in on this crazy picture – what exactly are these women afraid of contracting??? Let’s hope we don’t all have to end up wearing something like this during the winter – so pandemic chic!

  15. I had a regular flu shot. Not planning on getting the special one though. Especially since there’s a good chance I currently have the damn swine flu. I’m a mess. My mom is convinced.

  16. I had a regular flu shot when I worked at Kaiser a couple of years ago – and right after that vaccination I experienced the worst and only flu “symptoms” I’ve ever experienced (which were feeling achy and feverish for about 24 hours)- so no, no….

  17. We’re getting the regular flu shot but not the H1N1 vaccine. We got the regular shot last year and it really seemed to work. As for as the swine flu, I just think there is not enough research out there yet and I am worried about the side effects down the road. Oh…and I liked Mary’s comment. 🙂

i was really torn about this – but i don’t think we are going to get it. we’ve never even given our kids the regular flu shots before. i am going to try to take some extra precautions with our kids. it’s a tough choice – i have to admit that i am still concerned about my kids – but i’m always concerned when they have any type of bug. we’ll just do what we can to keep a clean house, get plenty of sleep & vitamins 🙂

  19. Everyone around here is sick already. Several schools in the area are closed because 20%+ of the students are absent. I figure by the time the vaccine is available we will have either had it or built up our own immunity to it. Local health officials are advicing people to get the vaccine even if they have been sick just in case it wasn’t really H1N1. I’m a little undecided about all of it I guess!

I am so glad you addressed this hot topic on your blog. It’s great to read what other moms are thinking about it. We were at our pediatricians’ office yesterday for a well check, and I of course asked the million dollar question – do we or don’t we? Our doc said there have been many cases in their office (in Long Beach) already, and they of course strongly recommend it. However, they can’t be 100% sure of any possible effects. It is a “dead” virus so the chances are less likely. Our doc also informed me that a 6 month old, otherwise healthy baby boy, died at LB Memorial from swine flu. Nicolas had the “regular” flu vaccine yesterday and Kayla will once her vaccine is in. With all that being said, we are still undecided! I am certain that I will not get it or my husband. We aren’t the really young or old, so we will pass on it and there probably wouldn’t be any left for us anyway.

  21. I have to say, I think it’s been blown way out of proportion, but then again, what isn’t blown out of proportion in the media…

The jury is still out on whether or not we’ll get the vaccine…I know my hubby won’t as he’s never had a flu shot. I’m still trying to decide on whether or not to get the kids (and myself) the regular flu vaccine.
